Home to mythical beasts, mighty peaks, and breath-taking scenery. The Highlands and Islands are like something out of a fairy tale.

Visit the beautiful Scottish Islands

For island adventures, take a trip to the Isle of Lewis and Harris. There is plenty to explore on this island, including the Calanais standing stones and the Gearrannan Blackhouse village. The island is also home to the Isle of Harris distillery and one of the UK’s best beaches, Luskentyre sands.

On the Viking island of Shetland, visit the Jarlshof Prehistoric and Norse settlement. It is said to be the most remarkable archeological site ever excavated in Britain. For more about Shetland's heritage visit The Shetland Museum and Archives. Located on Hay's Dock, this popular attraction shares the secrets of the island. Another popular site is the Crofthouse Museum. Here visitors are transported back in time to the life of a resident living in a 19th century croft house. For a more energetic day out, why not take to the sea and do a bit of otter spotting and whale calling?

Your Viking adventures can continue with a trip to Orkney. Across this beautiful island you can still see remnants of its fierce history. Take a guided tour through St Magnus Cathedral, followed by a history lesson at The Orkney Museum. Both are popular attractions for history lovers. With its soaring cliffs and stunning beaches, try taking a break from walking on land. With a local love for sea kayaking, this popular activity is a must! And don’t worry if you don’t know what you are doing as a guide is on hand to show you the ropes.

Explore the stunning Scottish Highlands

The Cairngorms National Park is definitely a family favourite. Fill your days with beautiful scenery and energetic woodland walks, all in the name of fun. Popular attractions include the Landmark Forest Adventure Park, and the Highland Folk Museum. Not forgetting the Highland Wildlife Park, and the popular Cairngorm Reindeer Centre.

The Cairngorms is the perfect place for those who love the outdoors and being active. Travellers can explore this national park by foot or bike with many guides available. For something a little different, why not try canyoning or white water rafting?

With a trip to Loch Ness, there is plenty for everyone. One of the best ways to explore this area and get a glimpse of its mysterious monster is by water. Boat cruises are available all year round from different locations on the loch.

Another popular day out involves a trip on the The Jacobite Steam train. This vintage train travels from Fort William to Mallaig where you can enjoy some local fish n' chips. For Harry Potter fans, this train also crosses over the famous Glenfinnan viaduct. Make sure you look out for Ron and Harry in their flying car as you cross!
