HIA Fire Service – providing immediate emergency response capabilities and supporting our operations through provision of essential airport services

The principle objectives of HIA Fire Service are to save lives in the event of an aircraft accident or incident and to reduce damage to property and the environment. The diverse nature of our operations require unique solutions and these are achieved through working in partnership across internal departments and with external organisations.

The Airport Fire Service has become more business focused over recent years and is committed to exploring initiatives which can offer a service, but also generate income to the business such as Fire Safety training, Fire Extinguisher servicing, First Aid training and a range of courses and services designed to meet local business needs.

A host of other tasks is also undertaken by the Airport Fire Service across the different locations including Bird Hazard Control, provision of assistance for passengers with additional requirements, habitat management, de-icing, snow clearing and airfield maintenance.

All of our fire-fighters undertake a comprehensive programme of training and assessment designed to develop their knowledge and skills across the range of roles they are required to undertake.  Ongoing training plans are in place to ensure our Airport Fire Service are prepared for every eventuality.

HIA deploys a fleet of modern fire appliances, with Iturri 4×4 vehicles in most locations, Sides 6×6 appliances provided at Inverness and custom Land Rover-based appliances at the smaller locations. In addition, five of the locations have water rescue facilities requiring Rescue Craft. Our airports are provided with fire simulators, which enable our highly-skilled crews to train across a range of realistic fire-fighting scenarios.

HIA has close links with all of the external emergency services and agencies encompassed by the emergency plans. All HIA airports have emergency procedures for internal services, and multi-agency major incident plans agreed with each external responding agency.
