“Amazing” £29,000 raised for local charity
Inverness Airport “Run the Runway” event raises “amazing” £29,000 for Maggie’s Highland Centres
Inverness Airport runway runners have helped to raise £29,000 for Maggie’s Highland Centres, by taking part in the annual ‘Run the Runway’ charity event.
The fourth annual event saw more than 110 athletes, fun-runners and walkers, take on the 5km route of the airport’s runways at midnight on Saturday 26 August 2017.
Runners warmed up on the apron and after completing the circuit were met at the finishing line by event ambassador, Karen Darke MBE, Team GB Paralympian, who presented medals and prizes to the competitors.
Commenting on her involvement in the event, Karen said: “I was inspired to be part of Maggie’s Midnight Run the Runway event at Inverness Airport: not only is it a great chance for people to challenge themselves whilst raising money for a great cause, but also a unique opportunity to do exactly what should be done on a runway – running.”
The money raised will go directly to the Maggie’s Highlands Centre in Inverness which costs more than £480,000 to run each year. In 2017 alone, Maggie’s estimate that they will help around 10,000 people from across the Highlands who are affected by cancer.
Andrew Benjamin, Centre Fundraising Manager for Maggie’s Highlands said: “To raise such a huge amount of money from this fantastic and fun event is nothing short of phenomenal, especially as this is our first year of running the event.
“The money raised is greatly appreciated and will certainly help towards keeping the centre running. Everyone at Maggie’s is extremely thankful to everyone who was involved with this event and we hope to see you all again next year.”
Callum Smith, Customer Focus Manager at Inverness Airport said: “This is a great event which we look forward to each year. The atmosphere is always very exciting and colourful with many donning fancy dress for the occasion.
“We are delighted to have played our part in helping Maggie’s raise such an amazing sum, we hope that the Maggie’s Highland Midnight Runway Run will return again next year”
Event sponsors included Tesco, Dan Moore Elite Training, Café Rapide and HMS Host.
